The Poqomam Resistance Movement:
Protecting Land, Culture, and Identity
For decades, the Poqomam people of Santa Cruz Chinautla have been standing up against the destructive practices of unregulated sand extraction companies like Arenera La Primavera, Arenera El Pino, Piedrinera San Luis among others. These companies have caused severe environmental damage, polluting the Las Vacas River and threatening the community’s way of life. The Poqomam people especially the women, depend on the land and natural resources to sustain their traditional livelihoods, including pottery making. But the ongoing sand extraction has jeopardized not only their environment but also their cultural practices and economic stability.
In the face of these challenges, the Poqomam women like María del Rosario, have been at the forefront of this peaceful resistance, advocating for their right to be consulted on extraction projects. Their goal: to protect their land and preserve their cultural heritage for future generations. However, the ongoing environmental degradation is making it harder for them to access the materials necessary for their pottery, putting their ancient craft at risk.

The Vital Role of Women in the Resistance
Women have always been the backbone of the Poqomam community, and their leadership in La Resistencia Pacífica is critical. Pottery-making, passed down through generations, is not only an essential cultural practice but also an important economic activity for these women. Unfortunately, the deterioration of clay quality due to sand extraction near vital rivers like Chinautla, Zapote, and Las Vacas has made it increasingly difficult for them to create the fine pottery that defines their heritage.
The women of La Resistencia Pacífica are not just protecting their environment; they are safeguarding their culture and way of life. Through protests, legal action, and advocacy, they continue to fight for their rights, standing as champions of environmental protection, cultural preservation, and social justice.
